LegalView.com Announces Its New, Free Legal Encyclopedia

LegalView is a new, easy to use, free legal-information resource, for ordinary people seeking information on legal issues and controversies. This new site provides general legal resources such as a legal dictionary and legal encyclopedia, in addition to information about specific legal issues such as mesothelioma and unsafe drugs.

Denver, CO (PRWEB via PR Web Direct) July 11, 2006 -- LegalView.com today announces the addition of its new Legal Encyclopedia, based on Cornell University's WEX Encyclopedia. The encyclopedia joins the Legal Dictionary, Legal Directory, and massive legal bookstore as part of a free "everything legal" service bringing legal information and legal resources to ordinary people.

LegalView provides two types of legal information. First, the general legal resources, allowing people to look up legal terms and legal definitions, and to seek legal information through a wide range of legal resources; LegalView's directory includes many thousands of links to useful online resources, for instance, from legal publications and blogs, to lists of expert witnesses and paralegal services.

Asbestos sufferers

The government has announced moves to speed up compensation claims for cancer sufferers struck down after being exposed to asbestos.
In a written ministerial statement, John Hutton, Work and Pensions Secretary, unveiled a series of measures to ensure those suffering from mesothelioma would receive their money before they died.
The move was widely welcomed by support groups and MPs who have long campaigned on behalf of sufferers and their families.
Mr Hutton said he was determined to find a long-term solution to the issue but interim measures to speed up the claims process would be put into action immediately.
Around 1800 people are currently diagnosed with mesothelioma each year, and as many as 2400 people could die from it annually by 2013.
But while the disease has a long latency period, people typically die within 12 to 18 months of diagnosis.

Jury awards widow $10 million in asbestos lawsuit

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. A Newport News Circuit Court jury awarded 10-point-4 (m) million dollars to the widow of a former shipyard worker who died of lung cancer after working with materials that contained asbestos.

The verdict in Wanda Jones' wrongful death lawsuit came yesterday, the first anniversary of the death of 60-year-old Buddy Jones.

She says the award from three companies that made the materials offers "some justice and recognition for what he went through."

Her attorney, Robert Hatten, called the verdict a landmark because one-third of the judgment will come from John Crane Incorporated, which has refused to settle other asbestos cases.

Ed Mueller, an attorney for John Crane, said the products were safe. He said ... quote ... "I'd take a piece out and put it around my neck and wear it home."

The judgment is split with two other companies: Johns Manville Corporation and Garlock Sealing Technologies.

City Voices, City Visions: This is Their World

Right now I'm at the ThinkBright Summer Digital Institute at WNED Television in Buffalo, NY, where I gave a keynote this morning about the role of Web 2.0 in education. (I'll upload a podcast and powerpoint of it later.) One of the highlights of the day was learning about an uber-cool project here in Buffalo called City Voices, City Visions (CVCV). The program teaches secondary school educators how to integrate video production into the curriculum. So far, dozens of educators have received training, and their students are producing videos on a wide range of subjects, from social studies to poetry. They've put together a video FAQ about the project, addressing questions that educators often have about the initiative. There are also several dozen student videos online at the CVCV website.

My favorite, video, by far, was a project called In Our World Today.

Government to act on mesothelioma claims

The controversy over compensation for mesothelioma sufferers looks set to take yet another turn after Tony Blair promised to take action over a recent House of Lords ruling. The judgment means that a single employer will not have to pay full compensation if another employer could also be guilty of exposing the same employee to asbestos. Because the time between exposure to asbestos and the diagnosis of mesothelioma can span decades it is not always possible to prove which company is responsible.

The House of Lords judgment was intended to safeguard employers from having to pay full compensation in cases where another employer could have been held responsible but is no longer operating.

The ruling was met with dismay by the families of mesothelioma sufferers and by the unions and prompted the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, to promise action on the new law.
